Thomas Hoepker
Retrospective (1955 – 2008)

His work occupies an exceptional place within German photography. In over 50 years of working as a photographer, art director, agency president, and filmmaker, BFF honorary member Thomas Hoepker (*1936) has had a unique and lasting influence on our collective visual memory and the image-based media. His photographs have appeared in magazines such as Kristall , magnum , twen , stern , and Geo , while his films have been shown on German television and on Arte. He is also a member of the legendary photo agency Magnum.

Thomas Hoepker has worked at numerous flashpoints around the world, documenting both the poor and the powerful. He has given us images of Muhammad Ali and Willy Brandt, the Shah of Persia and Erich Honecker, the ruins of post-war Germany and the aftermath of September 11 th in New York . Already at the age of 22, Thomas Hoepker formulated a philosophy that would be a hallmark of his work over more than half a century, including today’s digital age and the technical possibilities it offers. According to Hoepker, a photographic document has to be “honest” and bear witness to the photographer’s personal commitment. Back in 1958 he said: “You have to be in touch with the times, to want to explore the present moment, and to track down the motifs that ask the big questions.”

An exhibition by the Association of Freelance Photo Designers (BFF) in cooperation with Magnum Photos and hp Hewlett-Packard.
