Olaf Martens – Fragments

Olaf Martens’ photographs tell stories — stories stemming from a variety of different sources. His work combines sober lighting and cool eroticism to create an intense and artificial atmosphere, all the while maintaining a playful and elegant light touch. Olaf Martens chooses settings marked by changes and upheavals, and seeks to uncover the fractures and fissures of everyday life. These unusual settings play a key role in determining the content of his works, and they remove the depicted subjects from their familiar associations. The photographs’ messages are conveyed by the continual oscillation between contradictory information. Dualities such as male/female, decadence/poverty, and being/appearance are investigated, as are clichés that are deconstructed by means of ironic fragmentation. Meanwhile, the glamorous aspect of the works remains completely unaffected by this process.

An exhibition organized by the Association of Freelance Photo Designers (BFF) in cooperation with Plan B* Gallery/ Vienna.
