Nina Berman - Purple Hearts - Back from Iraq

In a series of remarkable portraits of U.S. veterans returned home from the Iraq war, Nina Berman’s series “Purple Hearts — Back from Iraq” depicts the very high price that some pay for war, particularly those directly involved. Her photographs show severely wounded soldiers back at home or in hospitals, rehab facilities, and at military bases. Berman’s sobering images present a reality of war that is often lost in everyday reporting. Appended to the photographs are quotes from the soldiers.

In addition to the individual portraits, Berman’s renowned photo series “Marine Wedding” is also being shown as an exhibition for the first time. This work focuses on 24-year-old Sergeant Ty Ziegel of the United States Marine Corps, who suffered first-degree burns to his face and lost his left forearm and three fingers of his right hand as a result of a bomb attack on the Iraq-Syria border. Berman’s emotional images document how Ziegel — after more than 40 operations and being hospitalized for 18 months — returns to his hometown in Illinois to pick up the threads of his life and marry his longstanding fiancée. Berman’s wedding image, which shows Sergeant Ziegel in full dress uniform together with his bride, won the World Press Photo Award.
