In recent years Lucia Nimcova has taken an intense interest in life and developments in Eastern Europe. Research for a new project took her back to her home town in Slovakia. While inspecting documents in a public archive, she realized how little things had changed in the period between the fall of the Communist dictatorship and the country’s accession to the European Union in 2004. This encouraged her to revisit some of the places familiar from her childhood, where she was able to capture a series of fascinating scenes seemingly untouched by the passage of time. She encountered people in the very same public functions they had occupied years ago, discovered places and institutions frozen in a bygone age, and even witnessed public events and political discussions showing unmistakable signs from the past: scenes which seemed stuck in a time warp undisturbed by any political or economic change. Therein lies the fascination of her winning series of photographs, which reveal more than might appear at first glance. Nimcova’s quest to track down the signs of change is compelling in terms of form and content. Her arch look at everyday Slovakian life makes the viewer smile — and reflect.
