People who think fashion photography is boring and superficial have never seen photographs by Esther Haase / BFF. An internationally successful fashion photographer who originally wanted to become a dancer, she has enriched the business with an unusually dynamic visual language. Particularly impressive is a photo series that subverts the main premise of the beauty industry: that fashion models have to be young, beautiful, and perfect professionals. Instead, Esther Haase's fashion photography features elderly people who have no modeling experience whatsoever. For instance, for one photo series she dressed clients of the Berlin nursing service Jahnke in clothes designed by the icon of punk, Vivienne Westwood. Haase has been pursuing this project for over ten years because the results are so sensational. “Working with the elderly is incredibly exciting,” the photographer says. “What I find fascinating about this work are the moments of truth and sudden flashes of joie de vivre that surface. That’s why I’ve kept pursuing this project from my early days as a photographer until today. It’s not the façade that counts, but what comes from inside. After all, feelings don’t age.”
