Dennis Hopper – Artist Portraits from the 1960s
Before achieving his international breakthrough as a director and actor with Easy Rider in 1969, American multi-talent Dennis Hopper had already made a name for himself in the sister discipline of photography. Between 1961 and 1967, Hopper captured the essence of those turbulent times with fascinating images of the U.S. civil rights movement and striking portraits of the rising young pop stars of his own generation. His photographs bring the 1960s back to life, with images of Hollywood and Greenwich Village, bikers and rock stars, pop art luminaries and Beat generation figures. His impressive portraits of the 1960s art world — especially the extended circle of New York pop artists — are at the center of the exhibition at this year’s Visual Gallery at photokina 2008. The show includes portraits of David Hockney, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Ed Ruscha, and Andy Warhol.

The exhibition is organized in cooperation with Galerie Hans Mayer, which has provided the photographs.
